The role of journalism in Promoting evidence Based Health Policy for Reducing Child Mortality & Improving Maternal Health

Peshawar, PK – 19 August 2013. “One third of child deaths are due to malnutrition and 48% households are food insecure in Pakistan. Pakistan is among the 03 countries in the world which are still polio endemic and there is a dire need to invest in health workers, especially those working on the frontline to reach the most vulnerable mothers and babies” Said by Dr. Fazl Nasir General Secretary Peshawar University Teachers Association in a seminar held in University of Peshawar today.

This seminar is arranged by Mishal Pakistan with the collaboration of “Save the Children” and Peshawar University Teachers association with title of “The role of journalism in Promoting evidence Based Health Policy for Reducing Child Mortality & Improving Maternal Health”. The basic purpose of briefing is creating awareness about “Every One” campaign of “Save the Children”. The cause is about increasing the health and nutrition programs on the ground to help ensure an increase in access, quality and coverage of maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition services.

Senior Journalist Zahir Shah Sherazi discussed the role of Media in said that Health news should be a soft news to get maximum coverage. He revealed the different areas for Health Reporting which is ignored by media in Pakistan. He said that media should done research while working on different Health issues.

Provincial Manager “Save the Children” Mr. Adnan Sajid said that every year nearly 3 million babies die within the first month of life, most from preventable causes and more than a million of these babies die on their first day of their lives, making the birthday the riskiest day for newborns and mothers everywhere. There is a dire need of breast feeding ordinance 2013 to establish by the provincial assembly in KPK.

They emphasis that media should enhance focus on health issues and play its role in promoting awareness among masses about Health issues because our rest of population is unaware about the major causes of deceases. It was agreed that this type of seminars plays an important role for capacity building of Health Journalists and better understanding of health Issues in Pakistan.
