Press Council of Pakistan Chairman Raja M. Shafqat Khan Abbasi has said that in order to fulfil its social commitment free media is bound to highlight health issues concerning general masses and it should do all what is required to build capacity of journalists covering health beat because healthier people can make a strong nation.

He stated this while speaking as a guest of honour at a Health Training Workshop for journalists organised by Mishal Pakistan in collaboration with Save the Children Pakistan in Islamabad on Tuesday, says a press release.

He said that media needs to focus issues related to waterborne diseases as 80 per cent of gastrointestinal ailments are caused by drinking polluted water. “To look into the serious issue of availability of drugs their prices and quality we need to build capacity of our journalists covering health beat,” he added. Around 25 journalists from Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Fata and Islamabad took part in the health training workshop, which was organized with a view to enhance capacity of the journalists covering health issues.

The workshop was moderated by Amir Zia, Editor ‘The News’ Karachi. During the workshop participants were briefed about the essentials for covering basic health issues concerning masses.

The workshop was meant to launch a joint initiative for capacity building of health journalists to encourage ethical, independent and pluralistic media and communication for sustainable development.
