Serious efforts needed to enrol seven mln out of school children: Governor Punjab

ISLAMABAD, Jan 23 (APP): Governor Punjab Muhammad Sarwar on Thursday called for making serious efforts to educate the seven million out of school children across the country. Addressing at a 13th convocation of Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) held here, Muhammad Sarwar said the country is faced with multiple challenges and only prioritizing education can resolve all these issues.He said “ignorance has shaken the fabric of our society and only education can inculcate the core value of tolerance and bring peace in the country.The governor said that the future of our country is safe in the hands of youth who are making progress in various fields of life. He said FJWU has achieved a prominence place among the country’s known universities in a short span of 14 years.The university is striving to promote quality education among the girls and its role in grooming young ladies speaks of its commitment toward women empowerment.
Executive Director, Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr Mukhtar, on the occasion said the access rate of higher education has raised today from 2.6 percent upto eight percent in the year 2010 while the number of universities has been increased from 56 to 153.
He said the research publications have increased from 800 upto 9000 in number which is reflective of tremendous success.
Dr Mukhtar said still 92 students out of 100 have no access to higher education in the country which is still a challenge for us to cope with.
FJWU Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr. Samina Amin Qadir the FJWU has improved its position in HEC ranking from 5th to 4th position in medium-sized universities.
The students residing in the far flung areas are studying in the university and the varsity has students from 89 district of the country.
To cope with the space and security problems, she said “the university has
been under expansion. We are in the process to construct girls hostel building in the university premises to accommodate 700 students and it will be functional in near future.”
She said the university is waiting for the release of promised allocation of Rs 220 million for construction of this facility.
The university has initiated various programme including M.Phil programmes in Education and Counseling Psychology.
A university Counseling Center has been established which would greatly help the students to resolve the issues and problem which they face at university as well in daily life, she said.
As many as 1,491 students were awarded degrees on the occasion which include one Ph.D degree, 21 M.Phil degrees, 1087 master’s degrees and 382 bachelor’s degrees.
Around 43 students received gold medal in their respective fields while 42 received silver medals.
