Higher education opens vistas of success in life: Punjab governor

Islamabad: Punjab Governor Chaudhary Muhammad Sarwar has said that higher education opens unlimited vistas and possibilities of success and growth in life.

“Concentrate on the importance of time, let me assure you that intelligence doesn’t work alone, hard work is the key to success in practical life. You are privileged to have an opportunity to study in a prestigious institution and it is your responsibility to think about the underprivileged who do not have access to the education at all,” he stated this while addressing the commencement ceremony of 13th Convocation of Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, held at the Jinnah Convention Centre here on Thursday.

The governor, who was the chief guest, conferred degrees upon graduating students of PhD, MPhil, Masters and Undergraduate programmes. Students with distinction were honoured with gold and silver medals for their outstanding achievements in their academic career.

He said that money is not the measuring criteria for success; success is what you do for others. He assured his full support for fulfilling the demands of the university. “We have to work together to take our state forward along the path of inclusive growth & development through intellectual and scientific know-how,” he added.

In total, 1,491 students including 1 PhD, 21 MPhil were awarded degrees. In the Masters programme 1,086 students from 17 different departments were awarded degrees. Chaudhary Muhammad Sarwar along with FJWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Samina Amin Qadir awarded 43 gold and 42 silver medals to the students, who achieved top positions in their respective departments. Gold medals and silver medals were awarded to the students from each department to acknowledge their outstanding performance academically.

In Masters programme, Muneeza Hamid and Sana Aslam of Behavioural Sciences, Shadab Sheikh and Tehmina Muneer of Business Administration, Sidra Zia and Ifrah Zahid of Communication Sciences, Maimoona Zia and Mehwish Shakeel of Computer Sciences Department, Sabahat Nazia and Samina Jabeen of Defence and Diplomatic Studies, Maryam Ahmed and Ayesha Tariq of Economics, Nagina Shaheen and Maimoona Mazhar of Education, Asma Rehman Khan and Saima Waheed of English, Sadaf Rehman and Kinza Shahid of Environmental Sciences, Sehrish Jamil and Sameen Gul of Fine Arts, Zahra Mukhtar and Taskeen Mansoor of Gender Studies, Nazia Javed and Warda Tanvir of Islamic Studies, and Misbah Ishaq and Zainab Shaukat of Public Administration were awarded Gold Medals. Whereas in Bachelor programmes, Asma Saleem of Behavioural Sciences Department, Ayesha Farrukh of Business administration, Sana Shoukat of Communication and Media Studies Department, Kiran Mujeeb Khan of Computer Science Department, Samra Naureen of Defence and Diplomatic Studies Department, Mehwish Hira of Economics Department, Maryam Abbas Jaspal of Education Department, Bushra Naeem of English Department, Zahra Hassan of Environmental Sciences Department, Zahra Habib of Fine Arts Department, Sundus Masood of Gender Studies Department, Nadia Zafar of Islamic Studies Department, Nazir Gul of Public Administration Department, Maryam Rani of Software Engineering Department, Ayesha Afzal of Computer Arts Department and Noor-ul-Iqra of Mathematics Department were awarded Gold Medals.

The First Women Bank awarded the gold medal and cash prize worth Rs15,000 to Maryam Ahmad and Ayesha Tariq of Economics Department for their outstanding performance in their academic career. Regional Chief First Women Bank Fouzia Janjua awarded the medals.

The Bank of Punjab gold medal and cash prize of Rs10,000 went to Shadab Sheikh of the MBA. Regional Chief of Bank of Punjab Khwaja Shahzad Gul along with the chancellor and the vice chancellor awarded the medal.

Mullah Wahidi gold medals were awarded to Sana Shaukat, Wardah Amjad of Masters and Sidra Zia of Bachelors of Communication and Media Studies Department in the specialisation of Print Media. Syed Musa Raza Wahidi along with the chancellor and the vice chancellor awarded the medals.

Media Development Trust awarded gold medals for Masters and Bachelors Programme of Communication and Media Studies Department in Electronic Media. Ifrah Zahid and Humna Tasawar and Umme Kalsoom were the recipients. Amir Jahangir, CEO of Media Development Trust, awarded the medals.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, executive director of the HEC, said that Higher Education Commission achieved a lot since 2002. Last year, there were 9,000 research publications that represent the dedicated work of faculty in Pakistan. He said that education is the solution to all problems Pakistan is facing right now.

Earlier, FJWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Samina Amin Qadir, while addressing the students, said that the university has improved its its HEC ranking from 5th to 4th position in the medium-sized universities.

The Fatima Jinnah Women University believes in developing and strengthening academic linkages with the leading national and International universities and research institutions. At present the university has nineteen (19) active, fruitful and mutually beneficial collaborations. Seventy three (73) faculty members attended fifty four (54) international, national and regional-level conferences. She informed the audience that the faculty members during the preceding year published sixty five (65) research papers in international journals. She also told that the faculty member from the Department of Environmental Sciences has been awarded, ‘The Best Research Paper Publication Award’ under the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Outstanding Research Award and another faculty member from the Department of Environmental Sciences has been awarded, ‘Research Productivity Award 2013’ by Pakistan Council of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan.

She also advised the students to uphold the ethics of Fatima Jinnah Women University — to serve with compassion and commitment — to be generous with your knowledge, time and money and so that others may benefit from all that you have gained.
