1,491 students awarded degrees at 13th convocation of FJWU

ISLAMABAD: The 13th Convocation of Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, was held at the Jinnah Convention Centre on Thursday.
Punjab Governor and Fatima Jinnah Women University Chancellor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar graced the occasion as the chief guest and conferred the degrees to the graduating students of PhD, MPhil, masters and undergraduate programmes. Students with distinction were honoured withgold and silver medals for their outstanding achievements in their academic career.
Addressing the students, the governor said that higher education opens unlimited vistas and possibilities of success and growth. He stressed the need for valuing time and stated that intelligence did not work alone; hard work was the key to success in practical life.
In total, 1,491 students including one PhD and 21 MPhil students were awarded degrees. In the masters programme, 1,086 students from 17 different departments were awarded degrees.
Governor Sarwar along with FJWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Samina Amin Qadir awarded 43 gold and 42 silver medals to the students, who achieved top positions in their respective departments.
Gold medals and silver medals were awarded to the students from each department to acknowledge their outstanding performance.
The First Women Bank awarded the gold medal and cash prize of Rs 15,000 in total to Maryam Ahmad and Ayesha Tariq of Economics Department for their outstanding performance in their academic career.
Fouzia Janjua, regional chief of the First Women Bank, along with the chancellor and the vice chancellor awarded the medals.
Bank of Punjab awarded gold medal and cash prize of Rs 10,000 to Shadab Sheikh of MBA Department. The Bank of Punjab Regional Chief Khwaja Shahzad Gul along with the chancellor and the VC awarded the medal.
Mullah Wahidi gold medals were awarded to Sana Shaukat and Wardah Amjad of masters and Sidra Zia of bachelors of the Communication and Media Studies Department. Syed Musa Raza Wahidi along with the chancellor and the VC awarded the medals.
The Media Development Trust awarded gold medals for masters and bachelors programmes of Communication and Media Studies Department in Electronic Media.
Ifrah Zahid, Humna Tasawar and Umme Kalsoom were awarded with the medals.
Media Development Trust CEO Amir Jahangir along with the chancellor and the vice chancellor awarded the medals.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Sarwar called for making serious efforts to educate the seven million out-of-school children across the country.
He said the country was faced with multiple challenges and only prioritising education could resolve all the issues.
“Ignorance has shaken the fabric of our society and only education can inculcate the core value of tolerance and bring peace to the country.”
The governor said that the future of our country was safe in the hands of the youth who were making progress in various fields of life.
He said that the FJWU had achieved a prominent place among the country’s known universities in a short span of 14 years.
“The university is striving to promote quality education among the girls and its role in grooming young ladies speaks of its commitment toward women empowerment.”
Higher Education Commission (HEC) Executive Director Dr Mukhtar on the occasion said that the access rate of higher education had raised from 2.6 per cent to 8 per cent in the year 2010, while the number of universities had been increased from 56 to 153.
He said that the research publications had also increased from 800 to 9,000 in number. He said that still 92 out of 100 students had no access to higher education in the country, which was still a challenge for us to cope with.
